Tour snapshot
Overview
The Shan State covers a large part of north east Burma and his home to Wa, Intha, Pa-o, Lahu, Akha and dozens of other minority people each with their own culture and language. Kentung is the capital of eastern Shan State and was until recently an independent Saopha or kingdom.
Tucked away in the scenic mountain valley close to the Thai border, Kengtung‘s culture resembles those of the Mekong rather than Myanmar. A laidback town which has retained its many old traditions and customs, Kengtung is an archaeological treasure trove where classical Shan houses with intricately designed wooden balconies, ageing Buddhist temples mix seamlessly with crumbling colonial architecture left over from its yester years.
Kengtung is an excellent base for you to explore the distinctive cultures of the colorful hill tribes. Short treks take you to unique Loi villages who inhabitants have continued to live a very traditional lifestyle.
