Day trips in Hue city: Top things to see and do

Thien Mu Pagoda

The first landmark appealing to tourists whilst they are in day trips in Hue city is Thien Mu pagoda (Heaven Fairy Lady Pagoda). Maybe, are you wondering why the pagoda carries this miraculous name? Actually, it occurs from a legend about an old woman appearing in colored costume and standing on the top of the hill where the pagoda is located nowadays; she declared locals that there would be a Lord coming and founding a Buddhist pagoda with the aim of enhancing the country’s prosperity. Afterwards, Lord  Nguyen Hoang was told about the woman’s prediction and immediately ordered to construct this building with the name of Thien Mu pagoda. The attraction contains an enthralling historical meaning, not to mention the most panoramic and spectacular landscapes in the contemporary region.

Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi)

Imperial Citadel used to be the imperial seat of government in the Vietnam’s feudal society. The attraction is indeed vast as a complex of pavilions, temples, moats, museums, moats, walls, gates and galleries, all of which are put in ancient costumes appearing from a variety of Vietnamese historical periods. It is estimated that 3 hours are ideal for experiencing the whole citadel. Although some areas were damaged by the war bombs in the past, the rest is still intact now and draws lots of visitors.

Khai Dinh Tomb

Khai Dinh Tomb, constructed in 1920-1931, is known as the place where Emperor Khai Dinh of Vietnam rested in peace. The tomb is designed in a special style which is the combination of traditional Vietnamese architecture and modern influence. In the Vietnamese history, Khai Dinh was a bad ruler and not loved by his people because of his collaboration with enemies (the French); to increase the budget used for building the tomb, he required to raise taxes on the peasantry. He died when he was 40 years-old, but his successor, Bao Dai managed to finish the structure a few years later. Because Bao Dai was the last ruler of Nguyen dynasty, Khai Dinh tomb was also the last imperial tomb in Vietnam.

Minh Mang Tomb

Situated at Huong Tho Commune, Huong Tra District, Ming Mang Tomb is prominent on the west bankside of Perfume River and especially where there are two tributaries meeting, which creates an imposing river picture. It is easy to visit here as it is just about 12km to the south of Hue City. Built in 1840 under the reign of King Minh Mang, Minh Mang tomb is regarded as the most exquisite structures among all Nguyen dynasty royal tombs; it is also a glittering complex of various buildings like temples, pavilions, palaces, etc. The marvel is a masterpiece as its unique architectural style is harmoniously put in the charming landscapes.

Perfume River Cruise

For a day trip in Hue City, first there is nothing more wonderful than cruising along Perfume River to get a taste of the tranquil charm of the land which used to be the Vietnam’s capital in the feudal reigns. During the cruise, you will not only be served with onboard activities, but also take a chance to set foot in famed attractions here, including Nguyen Emperors’ mausoleums, Minh Mang tomb, Tu Duc tomb, and Imperial Citadel (consisting of Thai Hoa Palace, Nine Holy Cannons, Purple Forbidden City, Dynastic Urns, etc.).

The best time to join day trips in Hue city

Most regions in Vietnam are ideal for holidays of many international tourists as there is no disaster through this country all year round, but it is better to understand its weather so that the journeys are as smooth as possible. In Hue city, day trips will be perfect between February and April. The time falls into Spring, so the weather is warm with the temperature of around 22 degree Celsius and ideal for outdoor activities.

While from June and July is Summer, for those who are fond of sunbathing, it is ideal time to visit Hue City. Although the average temperature is up to 30 degree Celsius, too hot for day trips, a backdrop is relishing the deep blue sky in bright landscapes. Anyway, don’t get worried because visits to many different attractions of the city will not require exposing your face under the sun too long.

Nevertheless, day trips in Hue city from September to December are not good recommendations as the rain occurring more frequently contributes to factors which ruin their vacation in Vietnam. August is not also suggested for the trip even though you can still pay a visit to the city in this time as it falls into the peak season of domestic tourists – an oppressive perspective with the crowd.
